The second day of the technical visit for the Rio de Janeiro and Niterói bid for the 2031 Pan American Games, on this Thursday, October 2, involved the evaluation of facilities that highlight the legacy of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – starting with Deodoro Olympic Park.
The president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), Marco La Porta, the deputy mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, and the deputy mayor of Niterói, Isabel Swan, welcomed the Panam Sports Evaluation Commission, which visited the 9 facilities ready to host the 13 sports planned for the 2031 Pan American Games.
In the morning, the Commission visited the BMX Olympic Center, the Canoe Slalom Stadium, the Shooting Olympic Center, the Youth Arena, the Hockey Olympic Center, the Equestrian Olympic Center, and the Deodoro Stadium.
Afterwards, the Panam Sports officials flew over the Lagoa Rowing Stadium and Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium before landing at Copacabana Fort and continuing to the Army Physical Education School (EsEFEX) and the Operations and Resilience Center (COR) in Rio, in Cidade Nova.
Together, Rio’s COR and the Niterói Monitoring Center (CISP) have more than 5,000 monitoring and surveillance devices, including cameras and radars, and 500 professionals from different areas, who work in an integrated manner in 24-hour shifts for continuous monitoring and rapid identification and resolution of incidents.
“The legacy of the 2016 Games transformed Rio. In addition to the sporting legacy, the Olympic arenas and arenas transformed into schools and terminals, the demolition of the Perimetral generated an urban transformation in the Port Region. The VLT and BRT have improved mobility. And the COR, created for the Games, is now a benchmark in Latin America, monitoring the city and anticipating climate risks,” said Eduardo Cavaliere, deputy mayor of Rio.
The last day of evaluation will be this Friday, the 3rd, with a visit to facilities in Niterói. The election will take place on the 10th in Santiago, Chile. The Rio-Niterói bid is competing with that of Asunción (Paraguay).
